Procedure of Application

  1. Letter of Application
  2. The applying institution must submit a list of HPB cases done from the previous year for review
  3. Application fee is P10,000.00.
  4. Visitation Fee of P10,000.00 for those Institutions deemed eligible for visitation by the committee
  5. The following existing HPB programs: Philippine General Hospital, The Medical City, St. Lukes Medical Center, Rizal Medical Center & Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center are considered accredited under Grandfather clause until 2years after the first HPB specialty board exam.

Requirements for Accreditation in HPB Fellowship (2years program); additional 1 year for liver transplantation

  1. Hospital Requirements
    • Must be present in the sponsoring facility/institution
      1. Level 3 DOH License
      2. Multi-detector CT Scan
      3. General Ultrasound Services
      4. Intra-operative Ultrasound
      5. Pathology with Frozen Section / FNAB/Core bx
      6. Medical Oncology Services
      7. Endoscopy Unit ( ERCP and Choledoscopy)
      8. MIS
      9. Level III Clinical Lab
      10. C arm with portable x-ray
        • Text book (Blumgart’s Surgery of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas)
        • Journal
        • Access to e-book
    • Must be easily accessible to but not necessarily present in the sponsoring facility/ institution with memorandum of agreement
      1. MRI
      2. Cath Lab
      3. Nuclear Medicine Services
      4. Interventional Radiology Services
      5. Oncology Radiology Services
      6. Palliative Medicine Services
      7. Endoscopic Ultrasound Services
  2. Training Program Requirements
    1. Staff
      • 1.1. Program director
        1. PCS fellow
        2. Member of PAHPBS
        3. Proficient in IOUS
        4. Member of at least 1 of the ff: IHPBA, AHPBA, E-BHPBA
      • 1.2. Faculty ( at least 2)
        1. PCS Fellow
        2. Member of PAHPBSI
    2. Case Material 100 Major HPB cases in 2 years (60 variety HPB Cases) where the fellow perform the operation independently or perform the critical part of the operation.
      • 2.1. Minimum Requirements:
        • 2.1.1. Liver (20)
          1. Major Hepatectomy
          2. Segment-Specific Anastomotic Resection
        • 2.1.2. Pancreas (20)
          1. Pancreaticoduodenectomies
          2. Distal Pancreatectomies Pancreatic Drainage Procedures
          3. Distal Pancreatectomies Pancreatic Drainage Procedures
        • 2.1.3. Biliary Tract (20)
          1. Ampullary or Bile Duct Resections
          2. Biliary Anastomosis (Intra-and Extrahepatic)
      • 2.2. Liver Transplantation (50 cases)
        • 2.2.1. Liver Transplant- 30
        • 2.2.2. Donor Procurement- 20
      • 2.3. Policies on External Rotation- Foreign or Local institution:
        • 2.3.1. External Rotations are OPTIONAL
        • 2.3.2. Only second year fellows are allowed to rotate outside of the sponsoring institution provided that the fellow has completed at least 75% of the required index cases
        • 2.3.3. The rotation site must be a recognized high–volume center in HPB
        • 2.3.4. Rotation/s must be within the period of the Fellowship Training Program
        • 2.3.5. The maximum period of rotation must not exceed 6 months total
        • 2.3.6. Observership Programs and Intensive Seminar Workshop with certification from globally-recognized HPB Centers are acceptable rotations
        • 2.3.7. Cross-linkages among local training institution are highly encouraged
